And the point about darkness has nothing to do with songs about darkness but the dark side of the scene. If you didnt or dont think there was a LARGE dark side in the wings, you weren't there or blinded by the "Peace and Love" on the few occasions you caught a show.

Ask anyone who lost loved ones to dope, drink or recklessness of all kinds which the scene heavily ignored in the mantra of "Freak Freely".

Do you really see Garcia singing a tune about Satan? Honestly? He wouldn't even mention God in an interview for fear of lunatic followers would read a message into it.

The boys loved the Beatles and Stones, that doesn't mean they were gonna cover a song just because they wrote it. They pick their spots, same as Dylan tunes.

A lot of people on this board think the Dead would make anything sound good, but if you listen to a lot of the covers, especially the Beatles and Stones covers, they are poorly performed.
